Thonse, India

Thonse Ayurvedic Health Centre

The center is simple, there are mostly Indian guests and in winter it is quiet. It is not commercial and therefore it is not expensive to stay there and undergo all kinds of treatments. The cost is around €150 per week including everything the center has to offer: a private room with toilet (AC or non-AC), simple vegetarian meals, herbal teas, juices, packs, participation in the daily program and medical supervision. All kinds of Ayurvedic treatments are available, which are very affordable. See the price list.

Each day you can choose from a variety of treatments, including various massages with oils and herbs. Medical supervision by an Ayurvedic doctor and a naturopath is included. You will receive advice on which treatments and diet best suit you. If you wish, you can also participate in meditation, yoga and pranayama groups. You can find more information on the center's website.

The staff is very friendly and helpful and welcomes western guests especially in the winter months as this is their off-season. Do not expect luxury accommodation at Thonse, but simple pleasant rooms and friendly people. The people who do the executive work, the Ayurvedic and other treatments, are locally educated people and speak little English, the doctors and manager of course do. It is really a place "to relax in being and to heal." December, January and February are the best months to be there.

View from the centre

Thonse

Thonse is a small and quiet village in the north of the state of Karnataka. The village lies between the Indian Ocean and a large lagoon. There are a few typical Indian stores in the village and there is a bank with an ATM. There is a simple restaurant on the beach.

You can take long beach walks there. To the north is a vast narrow spit of land on which there are a few houses and a few temples. To the south, after an hour and a half walk, lies the village of Malpe with a fishing port and Indian beach entertainment. There are also several good restaurants here. From there you can take a boat to an uninhabited palm beach.

For more entertainment, the town of Udupi is also nearby, half an hour by bus. There is a square full of beautiful temples, stores and restaurants.

Practical

  • Mangalore is the nearest airport (70 km) and there is a cab from the center to pick you up or drop you off.
  • International airports nearby are Mumbai (Bombay) and Bangalore. From here, you can catch a flight to Mangalore. Bangalore is better as delays are less frequent there.
  • If you are looking for a flight to Mangalore, first find the best connection to Mumbai or Bangalore. Then look for a domestic flight. The total travel time can then be much shorter.
  • If you need help booking your ticket, we know a travel agency in Amsterdam that can help you at no extra charge.
  • For India, you need a visa. Here is a guide on how to apply for it online.
  • Plant a tree! We encourage participants to use a carbon reduction program to offset the environmental impact of the flight to India. See: Flygrn.com
  • Some rooms at Thonse Health Centre are air-conditioned. This makes a difference in price. AC is not really necessary in the winter season.
  • You can reserve a room on the registration form. Rooms are available for up to 25 participants.
There are hardly other hotels or guesthouses in Thonse, except a luxury resort a 10-minute walk away. In winter there is plenty of room, rooms start from €62 per night (two people). See: Paradise Lagoon
